Remembrance Day Tribute

IN FLANDERS FIELDS POEM
The World’s Most Famous WAR MEMORIAL POEM
By Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

Composed at the battlefront on May 3, 1915
during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium

This poem, by the Canadian army physician, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, (1872-1918) is one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in Ypres in the spring of 1915. Lieutenant Colonel McCrae fought on the Western Front during World War I. He was appointed brigade-surgeon to the First Brigade of the Canadian Forces Artillery with the rank of Major and second-in-command. In April 1915, McCrae was in the trenches near Ypres, Belgium, in the area traditionally called Flanders. Some of the heaviest fighting of the war took place there during what was known as the Second Battle of Ypres.

On 22 April 1915, the Germans used deadly chlorine gas against Allied troops. Despite the debilitating effects of the gas, Canadian soldiers fought relentlessly and held the line for another 16 days. In the trenches, John McCrae was surrounded by the dead and the dying as he tended hundreds of wounded soldiers. On 2 May 1915, one of his closest friends and a former student, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, was killed; he was buried later that day in a makeshift grave with a simple wooden cross, in a little cemetery outside McCrae's dressing station. Wild poppies were beginning to bloom between the crosses that marked the many graves. In the absence of a chaplain, McCrae performed the funeral ceremony. The next day, he gave a voice to his dead comrades and wrote the poem for which he is best remembered. Later in the war, he was transferred to the medical corps and assigned to a hospital in France. He died of pneumonia while on active duty in 1918.
John McCrae's poem was very nearly not published. Dissatisfied with it, McCrae tossed the poem away, but a fellow officer retrieved it and sent it to newspapers in England. The Spectator (London) rejected it, but Punch published it on 8 December 1915.

Lest We Forget This Remembrance Day, 11-11-2011

Click Here To View n Flanders Fields Video

The poppy's significance to Remembrance Day is a result of Canadian military physician John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields. The poppy emblem was chosen because of the poppies that bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their red colour an appropriate symbol for the bloodshed of trench warfare. A Frenchwoman, Anna E. Guérin, introduced the widely used artificial poppies given out today. Some people choose to wear white poppies, which emphasises a desire for peaceful alternatives to military action.

To all the peoples of the world, I once more give expression to America's prayerful and continuing aspiration:

We pray that peoples of all faiths, all races, all nations, may have their great human needs satisfied; that those now denied opportunity shall come to enjoy it to the full; that all who yearn for freedom may experience its spiritual blessings; that those who have freedom will understand, also, its heavy responsibilities; that all who are insensitive to the needs of others will learn charity; that the scourges of poverty, disease and ignorance will be made to disappear from the earth, and that, in the goodness of time, all peoples will come to live together in a peace guaranteed by the binding force of mutual respect and love.

- Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961
"Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."
 - John 15:13

Lest We Forget - 911

If  my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. - 2 Chronicles 7:14-15

Bluegrass Music For A Community Cause

"When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbours, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just."
– Luke 14:12-14
BLCF Cafe Community Dinner is funded primarily by personal donations from benefit concerts like that given by Bluegrass Music Duo ‘A Cup of Cold Water’ where 100% of proceeds go directly to feeding homeless and marginalized people at BLCF Cafe. Since BLCF Cafe has opened its doors in January 2008 and on every Wednesday evening has served a warm meal and fellowship in a safe friendly place for upwards of 100 guests. That’s over 5,000 people fed annually. BLCF Cafe was established by Bloor Lansdowne Christian Fellowship – BLCF Church as a means of outreach to the Bloor Lansdowne Community. Since its beginnings, BLCF Cafe, located in the heart of Toronto, has been run under the auspices of BLCF Church, relying upon volunteers for service and donations for funding. BLCF Cafe Community Dinner relies upon neither corporate sponsorship nor volunteer fees or contributions, preferring to rely solely upon the contributions of faithful supporters who share our vision of helping the homeless and marginalized. BLCF Cafe’s Mission Statement:

there's just something about that name

Kings and kingdoms will all pass away… "I marvel that whereas the ambitious dreams of myself, Caesar, and Alexander should have vanished into thin air, a Judean peasant - Jesus should be able to stretch his hands across the centuries and control the destinies of men and nations." - Napoleon I Bonaparte (1809)

♫ Clair de Lune - Isao Tomita - Claude Debussy

It is said that the crew of Apollo 8 has showed the photos of the Earth & the Moon from the space in a live television broadcast on Christmas Eve in 1968 as they read the first 10 verses from Genesis chapter 1.
Neil Armstrong who was the first man to set foot on the Moon on July 21,1969.
Another astronaut Aldrin who walked on the Moon later has said on a television broadcast on July 23,1969 that a verse from psalms has come to his mind.”When I consider the heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon & the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, thou art mindful of him?..”
It is said that he has written out this portion of Psalms 8 & left it on the moon.
It is said that the Astronaut Mitchell carried the microfilm Bible to the Moon in Apollo 14 in 1971.
”The moon & stars to rule by night;for thy mercy endureth forever.”Let us praise God who has created the moon & the stars.

BLCF Cafe - Bloor Lansdowne Community Dinner - Needs Volunteers To Help Feed The Homeless

Bloor Lansdowne Community Dinner, renamed in December 2009 as BLCF Cafe, was established in January, 2008 by and is run under the auspices of Bloor Lansdowne Christian Fellowship Church. On Wednesday evening's BLCF Cafe Community Dinner feeds and fellowships with over 100 homeless and marginalized people weekly, (over 5,000 a year).
This is not a “soup kitchen’ program. It’s more like inviting neighbours over for dinner. The tables are set, the ambiance is friendly and we serve our guests at the table restaurant-style, hearty and homemade meals and tasty desserts, with a spiritual break in-between. Dinner is served from 6 to 8 PM. Throughout the dinner, there is live music: Folk, Blue Grass, Gospel, usually featuring our friend Terry Sywanyk, guitarist / vocalist and songwriter with the duo 'A Cup of Cold Water'.

Bullied to death: They committed suicide because of bullying

"Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." - Ephesians 4:29-32
